- - - - - - - - - - - Since tonight she didn't have to be at the Hub as there wasn't anything going on, Gwen had decided that she and Rhys should have dinner out. Go to a fancy restaurant, order the finest wine and spend the evening staring into each others eyes and laughing at jokes. There was going to be no talk of the Hub or anything else that had the potential to ruin their time together. Tonight she and Rhys were going to be the only two people in the world that existed. Everything else would be like a dream to them. Gwen hoped this worked out the way she planned. It had been so long since they were able to have a nice dinner out without an interruption.
After dinner, they could return home or take a walk around Cardiff. She hadn't planned that part, but they could figure it out later. Not everything had to be planned out ahead of time. A smile came to her face as she thought of that night and the fun time she was planning on having. Even if Torchwood called her in, Gwen could just ignore it. Yeah, ignore it and continue with the fun date with Rhys. It couldn't hurt for them to get along without her for one night. She didn't need to go on every mission and it had been Jack that told her not to lose touch with her life outside Torchwood. Not to let it drift. Okay, Gwen wouldn't be able to ignore it. It was one of those things that was easier said than done.
The restaurant wasn't crowded and she and Rhys got a table outside. The wine was poured and they listened to the band play some music. She spoke very little, just listening to him. It felt wonderful to have a night where it was just them. It did feel like there was nobody else around, even though the laughter and chatter of the other guests could be heard. They were the only two people in the whole universe. As she listened to him, Gwen thought of how lucky she was to find him. She had found the man that she was going to spend the rest of her life with and to think that even after she met him, she wasted time by dating other men and not even liking Rhys. Of course, she had been in college and hadn't been thinking of the rest of her life then.
A loud noise, almost like a gun going off, made her look around. She didn't see anything around there. The reason why she knew that it wasn't a gun was the fact that it lingered for a good five to ten minutes before it stopped. By that time, Gwen was already out of her chair, running out of the restaurant, forgetting her date with Rhys. She wanted to get to the bottom of what was going on. If it was alien, she would have to contact Torchwood if they didn't already know and if it was something else, a common noise mistook for something worse, she could return to her date and apologize and hope Rhys didn't get mad at her.
She had always been a curious person. Sometimes it was a good thing and sometimes, like now, it was a fault. Gwen ran quickly until she came to a vacant alleyway and then stopped and looked around. It was quiet now, but she was sure the noise had started around in this area. Gwen glanced around until a small object caught it. She dropped to her knees in front of it and picked it up for a closer examination. Definitely alien, as it seemed too advanced for humans. She turned it around in her hands, wondering what it was and what it did.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - IBIS hadn't been on this planet long, and yet he already knew everything. He knew what time it was here, and what time it was in Hong Kong, and the currencies and how they were changing every minute. He knew the banks and each individual loss and gain. He knew about the messages flitting from dorm to dorm in each of the universities dotted around the world. He was monitoring exactly how fast the planetary plates were shifting over the molten rock beneath, and was scanning the nearest reaches of this Solar System for anything that might be considered useful.
He was a computer, after all, and this planet was so loud. And so primative. It was nothing to seep himself into each and every machine, to gather the data he needed. Initially, it had been to double cross his design for the organic form with the local register, to make sure he wasn't imitading a sentiment humanoid already here. And then had expanded, fascinated by the babble that crossed the surface of this world, and the power which seemed to come from...well, here.
But IBIS was there for a reason. He was tracking, tracking an object which would be of use to him, which would boost his diminishing power supply and allow his focus to return on getting back to his main port. Coming through the rift - the gap in time and space - had made each of his atoms rattle in the air, their power seeping and dancing and crashing with loud rings through the air. But it wasn't so bad, not like the Incident. He was following in the wake of something, after all.
A Blowfish, according to the records on this planet. Henchmen, more often than not, and it hadn't been hard for the Computer to move through the radio waves this planet was famous for, weave itself around the creature and scan it, searching for the object it needed. It had had it, recently, IBIS had been able to sense the trace, but then the creature had shrivelled and died, too exposed to such raw power to survive long.
And then the girl had come. A human girl, judging by her body temperature and heartrate...and not a girl at all. A woman, the records said. This was unfortunate, and IBIS was gathering himself into a pool of molten silver, hidden in the shadows, ready to use her mind to scan for what he needed...and then he didn't have to. He watched through the slowly revolving camera that was twisting out of it's original path to watch this area, watched as the human lifted an...object into the air. If he'd had a heart, it would have leapt. As it was...he simply shifted - the molten form gliding against gravity, up the wall it had been gathered against, still hidden in the shadows. It rose to almost six foot above the ground, a human-wide sheet, which then pulled away from the wall, molding itself into the super-computer's chosen template.
Originally silver, still hidden, that colour faded to be replaced with a natural skin tone blonde hair - human clothes and shoes. The last of the silver gathered up by the boy's eyes, and shimmered there for a moment, before fading, just slightly, as the organic form's systems were switched online, a heartbeat suddenly thudding through the shell's form.
Of course, this didn't take long. No longer than five seconds, Earth time. And then he stepped out, clearing his throat politely. "Umm...excuse me? That's mine..." According to the scans he had run, human personality might make the female question him, but it was late and dark and it was just an object. She would hand it over if he asked politely.

- - - - - - - - - - - It was a good thing she got to this object first. Alien devices in the hands of someone that didn't understand them could be dangerous. It was a good thing no crowd had gathered, which a little surprised her, as that noise when it landed had been loud and had lasted for awhile. It was human nature to be curious and yet, nobody but her had come to figure out what had happened. As Gwen studied the object, she didn't think it was too dangerous and calling Torchwood out would just draw a crowd and she wouldn't be able to get back to her date with Rhys. Not calling them out, though, could land her in hot water with Jack. Gwen had to weigh the pros and cons of not saying something and make a decision and hope that it would be the right one.
The object wasn't too big. It could easily be hidden somewhere and she could say that it was nothing, then give it to the team in the morning or even tonight after he was in bed. That just wasn't like her. She would never hide an alien object from the team and she would never ignore the job she had just to spend more time with Rhys. That was being irresponsible. Not too mention the things that could happen if this object really was dangerous. Gwen could be putting innocent lives in danger, not counting her own, by not reporting this. That realization bothered her. It seemed ridiculous to think that an object that didn't look dangerous could be, but she had learned never to underestimate things. Even if it didn't look dangerous, it could be and probably was.
She looked up when she heard a voice. It was a boy, barely more than a child. She stood up and looked at him skeptically at his words. She didn't think this object could be his. She had already decided this wasn't human and this boy certainly looked human to her. Gwen wasn't going to give the object to him. She was smarter than that. She wondered why the boy thought it was his and wondered if, perhaps, an alien was inhabiting the body, so it could get the object back. She had run into an alien like that before and it could be the case here. If it was, she had no choice but to call Jack.
Gwen could always be wrong about this artifact. It very well could be human. Some kind of new technology being worked on, but then why would this boy have it? That couldn't be it. She was going to trust her instincts on this one. It wasn't of this world. This boy wanted it for some reason, but she wasn't going to have that. Gwen had to wonder if the boy knew what it was, what it did. Without giving him anything, she wondered if she could get him to tell her what he knew about it. "You expect me to believe that?" She said, then looked at the object thoughtfully before turning her attention back to the boy. "If it's really yours, you'll be able to tell me what it is, what it does. Tell me that and I just might believe you."

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A slight frown crossed the surface of the boy's face. His feature's weren't exactly the most starltling in any sense, whether handsome, pretty or ugly. No, IBIS had crafted this body to blend in, to be one in a crowd and not to be picked upon. Of course, it could be changed, but this was the base template he used for all humanoid situations, merely changing the body temperature and vital signs depending on what planet he was on. It conserved energy, remaining with one form, and since the loss of the other IBIS units, conserving energy was a key focus in his future. The frown was edited perfectly as well - no matter how much it looked like an accident. IBIS didn't make accidents - it wasn't in his programming. But this frown, it was the perfect example of a simply confused human.
"What? No, it is mine," he said truthfully, still frowning in confusion. And a slight pang of what he recognised as the beginnings of irritation, which made him thing that some of his systems were still damaged, before he ran a quick scan to confirm that they weren't. "And why would I talk to you, anyway. Ain't allowed to talk to strangers. Specially not ones who pick up my stuff in alley's..." Now his tone was a blend of suspicion and wariness, and he added in a slightly shuffle of his feet and narrowing of his eyes.
"Tell you what it does? I ain't stupid, but that sure has hell proves it ain't yours! You'd know what it did if it was!" Not the most logical of arguments, and he could certainly see a few flaws in it. Quickly a program was set up to cover them, or at least, prepare covers for them. He didn't want to be discovered by a human. Not that anything would go wrong, but it would waste time, and IBIS was unable to change the timelines to get that time back.

- - - - - - - - - - - Gwen knew of a way to get him to talk to her. The problem was she couldn't use it. She had used it before when she wanted to talk to someone and it always made them speak. She passed herself off as a PC, but she didn't have the ID on her to validate what she said. She usually brought it when she was working, but she was off now and since she didn't expect this, she hadn't thought about it. Gwen was going to have to remember to carry it with her all the time now. Just in case something like this happened again. She could still use it, but if he knew to request ID, which a lot of people did, she couldn't pull it off. "So don't talk, but without proof, I can't give this back to you."
"Not mine," she agreed, "nor am I claiming ownership of it." Well, she sort of was, but just so it could be taken back to the hub and they could figure out where it came from, what it did. Talking with the boy was wasting time and if this was dangerous, time could be of the essence. Gwen couldn't just leave though. The boy was claiming ownership, so he'd probably try to stop her. Normal human boy, she could deal with, but if he wasn't human, she wasn't so sure she could do it herself, especially when she wasn't working. "If this is truly yours, why make the argument that it's not mine? That's proven. What needs to be proven is your ownership of it."
Considering she couldn't just take a kid off the streets and bring him to the Hub for Jack to deal with, this would have to be figured out there. Gwen figured the kid was hiding something and she was going to find out what it is. "I've never seen something like this before. Where did you get it?"
