The two before her were odd. And not just odd. Weird. What the hell were they even doing down here? They seemed so hesitant on everything too. They were guarding something, that much she was sure of. Perhaps they knew where Lance was, and they were hiding him from her. Maybe they worked for someone that had him. Blowing up the building and taking people. That’s what they were doing, right? She eyed them with a suspicious gleam in her eye. Perhaps she should be ready to run. There was no telling what people would do nowadays; at least that was what her Gramps said. Always acting crazy, he said. Her mum agreed, of course, but always because she was so pessimistic. But Donna didn’t even want to think about her mother right now. She would probably just tell her that she was right, anyway. ‘I told you not to work at the awful place as a temp, now, didn’t I? I warned you, missy! That’s right. You got yourself in a spot of trouble. Wouldn’t have happened if you had just gone to Jival Chowdry, like I suggested, but noooo, you never listen to me.’ Oh, it’d be awful when she got home. This certainly wouldn’t be up for discussion at dinner, that was sure.
The blonde woman was ready for action. She looked so… tense. Donna could’ve sworn she had seen her hand go for the gun that was at her side, but when she looked closer, the hand wasn’t by the weapon at all. She breathed slightly in relief, but knew that the gun was still there. All she had to do was grab it, and Donna would be done for. She clenched her teeth slightly. Why had she come down here? Lance was probably outside waiting for her, and she was down here trying to find him when he wasn’t even around! He owed her big, that one did! She was trying to save him in the midst of all the nutters and he was safe and sound outside of the building all along.
She watched the taller man approach her more, and she narrowed her eyes at him. There was an air of familiarity that he took on with her, which only ended up throwing her off a little. Who did he think he was, acting all friendly with her? She certainly didn’t know him. And… and… “Plucky?!” she cried as he made a comment about her. “What do you mean by plucky?” She glared at him, looking him up at down. She was about to ask him more questions, but he eventually told her that he hadn’t seen Lance and acted as though they were about to move on. “Now you just wait a minute, mister!” she demanded, taking an indignant step forward. “I came down here, tryin’ to find Lance and I’m not gonna leave until… until…”
Donna’s voice carried off, and she found herself stopping as the blonde woman seemed surprised by something. She suddenly had a very bad feeling. What could she have possibly been that shocked from? Realization hit her: they weren’t the ones that she should be worried about. Perhaps they were just down here trying to figure out what was going on or looking for someone too. But that meant that something else would have to be down here that had caused all the commotion. Something that could be sick and twisted and dangerous and…
She turned her head slowly, realizing that whatever-it-was had to be behind her, on the staircase, for that was where the two with her were looking. She held her breath as she swiveled her head, slowly following with her body. She paused, dead-still, as she took in the creature. It looked like a human, but something far worse. Like someone had mutilated it or it had been a victim to some sort of accident or… who knew. It was horrifying, and Donna found herself unable to scream or move for a long moment.
She realized that the tall man wasn’t nearly as thrown off about the creature as she was. She looked at him, dumbfounded, realizing that he was hardly affected by the presence of the strange individual. Her mouth was open in amazement at the fact that the two before her simply wanted to find out what the creature was doing, why it was here… Questions hardly seemed relevant to Donna at the moment. If they were so comfortable with the thing, then why weren’t they stopping it? Her bafflement was over, at least the part that had rendered her speechless, and she looked between them and the creature. She was between them and the staircase, and she didn’t particularly care for this setup. She glanced at the blonde with the gun, wondering if she would be quick enough to handle it if necessary. She wanted to take a step back to get out of the way, but she didn’t want to make any sudden movements. The idea of not surprising the creature with her voice had not apparently come to mind, however, and before she thought, Donna was snapping at the tall man. “What the hell is that thing?” she cried. “And why don’t you do something?”
