Things have been quiet. In fact, sometimes it seemed to her that things have been too quiet. She wasn't accustomed to having so many days go past without an alien coming to Earth for whatever reason. Usually, barely a day passed without something happening. When she had a day off to do what she wanted, she usually had a mystery to solve. Not for the past few days. The few times something did happen, Mr. Smith had debunked it. It had been man-made.
Not that Sarah Jane was bored and complaining. Rani and Clyde were doing enough of that for everyone. Since finding out her secret and helping her, they weren't used to sitting around doing nothing. They were sometimes the ones that brought her into something. They still spent a lot of time around her house, but when they weren't, Sarah was guessing they were walking the streets, keeping their eyes peeled for something.
She didn't wish anything would happen. She had dedicated her life to saving the Earth and even she was allowed a vacation sometimes. Things wouldn't stay this quiet for too long. Humans drew attention to Earth all the time and it wasn't always a right kind of attention. Sometimes it drew the attention of those aliens that wanted to take it over. More times than not, it seems, that was the case. There were only a few times Sarah Jane dealt with aliens that were kind and just looking for help.
She wasn't sitting at home, waiting for something to happen. Instead she drove into London, to a shopping center. She wasn't looking for anything in particular. She was just going to look around. If she saw something, she would buy it. It was a normal thing to do, after all. Sarah walked around the center for awhile, looking at some things, but there wasn't really anything she found that she liked or anything that Luke might like.
When she was back outside was when her watch went off. This was no ordinary watch. It was given to her a few years ago, after she ran into The Doctor again for the first time in years, and he gave it to her along with another version of K-9 and the sonic lipstick. Sarah Jane studied the readings as she walked, recognizing the species.

It was always nice running into an old companion again but he knew that these meetings usually meant danger wasn't far off. The TARDIS would reunite him with someone, only to have the two of them fight off an alien invasion together...or sometimes more than two, like when the Daleks had successfully stolen the Earth. But the danger never lessened the happiness of running into an old friend, and some happiness was just what the Doctor needed in his life right now.
The Doctor couldn't help but notice the strange tone in Sarah Jane's voice when she said she was surprised to see him again. He didn't need to be a genius to know that that meant she had run into him again after the Davros incident. What he really wanted to know was whether or not it was him she had run into or if it was a future him. But the Doctor knew better than to ask her that. His future would come soon enough, whether he wanted it to or not.
"Exactly what is bigger than you expected?" he inquired. He still wasn't sure why the TARDIS had brought him here but Sarah Jane had her watch out, which meant that she probably knew a lot more than he did right now. Sure enough, she let him know just who was roaming around Earth at the moment. The Bane. He had never dealt with them before but he knew about Sarah Jane's encounters with them. The Doctor hadn't intervened because he knew that she and her friends would be able to handle them by themselves.
He scratched his head as he tried to think of why they would be here again. "Well...I suppose they're looking to enslave humankind again but that goes without saying." He didn't think that they'd try anything like the last time with the drinks but that wasn't a sure certainty. "You're the expert, Sarah Jane Smith." She would probably have a better idea than he did what the Bane were doing back.

The Bane was the species she was picking up. She had dealt with them twice before. They were shifters and they were good at blending in with the times. They probably weren't the most dangerous creatures that came to Earth, but she would still prefer them to leave her planet alone. Only one good thing had come out of their first visit to the planet and that was her son. They created him, but she rescued him. Last time they were around, they were with the Sontaran, but it looked as if they might be alone this time. At least she wasn't picking up any other species.
Except she was very soon after that. There were few species that she didn't mind being on Earth and the one she was picking up now was among those species. Sarah Jane was trying to track down the bane, but the time lord signal was so much stronger. So The Doctor was closer to her than the Bane was. She turned to him when she heard the voice. "Doctor," she said, smiling, but she couldn't help but think that this was worse than she thought if he was there. "I'm surprised to see you again." Last time she had seen him, in this body, he had just saved Luke from getting hit by a car. He never said a word. All he did was wave. She figured he had been regenerating and he had. She had met the newest regeneration. He probably hadn't reached that point yet and she wasn't going to be the one to tell him.
"So this is bigger than I thought if you're around," she said. Last two times she had fought the Bane, he hadn't come to help. Usually, he didn't unless if it was something she and her companions couldn't handle. Like when she was almost married, she hadn't seen the threat and if she hadn't come around, everything would've changed for her. "I know the Bane is around, but I'm not picking up anything else. Do you know what's going on, Doctor?"
